Kuwait Bohras Mark World Environment Day with Beach and Local Clean-Up Activities

On World Environment Day, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Kuwait took part in a series of activities aimed at promoting environmental stewardship and community engagement. Held every 5th June, World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. Undertaken as part of the global Project Rise initiative, the Bohras’ volunteering was designed to take action and foster a sense of collective responsibility.

Beach Clean-Up at Arabian Gulf Street

The first activity was held at the beach located on Arabian Gulf Street in Kuwait City (the Capital Governorate), organised in collaboration with the local municipality authority. A dedicated team of 130 volunteers, including members of the Dawoodi Bohra community and local cleaners from the Municipality corporation, meticulously combed the shoreline, collecting trash and debris. This effort highlighted the community’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy marine ecosystem.

The event garnered attention from the local media, with ATV News Channel covering the activity. This exposure helped amplify the message of environmental conservation and the importance of community involvement in such efforts.

Local Clean-Up at Farwaniya Governorate

Following the beach cleanup, the second activity took place the next day in the Farwaniya Governorate.  Members of the Dawoodi Bohra community focused on cleaning the areas surrounding their local place of worship and the nearby garden. A total of 80 members participated in this clean-up effort, demonstrating their dedication to maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of their local environment.

Mufaddal Abbas, one of the participants, shared his thoughts on the event: “As our community leader always emphasizes being loyal to the country you belong to and where you earn your livelihood, cleaning and maintaining hygiene is the duty of every citizen and part of patriotism.”

Community Impact and Recognition

The local news channel praised the Dawoodi Bohra community for their organized and effective clean-up activities, recognizing the support from the local municipality corporation. These events not only help to beautify the areas but also strengthen the sense of unity and patriotism among the participants.

The Dawoodi Bohras, like Muslims across the world, believe that maintaining cleanliness is part of the faith. By taking part in these initiatives, the Dawoodi Bohra community of Kuwait showcases their commitment to environmental sustainability and their dedication to contributing positively to the society of which they are a part.
