To mark UN Arabic Language Day on December 18, we shine a spotlight on 25-year-old Burhanuddin Fakhri from the Dawoodi Bohra community of Ajman.

For over a decade, Burhanuddin has dedicated himself to mastering the art of Arabic calligraphy, an ancient tradition that beautifies the written word and preserves the cultural and linguistic heritage of the Arabic language.

"I first encountered Arabic calligraphy during my early studies, and I was immediately captivated by its elegance and the discipline it requires," he said.

Arabic calligraphy is one of the most revered and enduring art forms in Islamic culture, originating in the 7th century to ensure that the holy Quran was transcribed with clarity, precision, and beauty. Over time, it evolved into a highly sophisticated and decorative art form, admired for its fluidity and versatility. This artistic discipline is more than just a means of communication; it is a reflection of the spiritual depth, creativity, and heritage of those who practice it.

Burhanuddin’s journey began during his formative years at Aljamea-tus-Saifiyah, the Dawoodi Bohra community’s premier educational institute.

Encouraged by mentors and inspired by the beauty of the Arabic script, Burhanuddin began to immerse himself in the art, dedicating countless hours to refining his skills. "What began as a simple interest soon became a profound passion,” he said.

Over the years, Burhanuddin has mastered seven distinct styles of Arabic calligraphy, each with its unique characteristics and challenges. Among these styles are Naskh, known for its clarity and precision; Diwani, recognized for its dynamic, flowing lines; and Thuluth, celebrated for its intricate and ornate beauty. "Every style has its own rhythm, rules, and nuances, mastering them requires immense patience and precision, but the rewards are deeply fulfilling,” Burhanuddin explains.

For him, calligraphy is not only an art form; it is a meditative practice that offers peace and focus in a busy world. "In today’s age of constant distractions, calligraphy forces you to slow down and engage fully with each curve and stroke. It teaches you that every small detail matters. This art has helped me find clarity and control in my daily life," he said.

Beyond his personal practice, Burhanuddin is passionate about sharing his love for calligraphy with others. Over the years, he has discovered the joys and challenges of this timeless art with students from ages six to seventy.

"It is an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve seen how learning calligraphy can bring joy, pride, and a sense of accomplishment to people of all ages. It’s a privilege to help others connect with the beauty and heritage of the Arabic language," he continued.

Burhanuddin believes that Arabic calligraphy plays a vital role in preserving the cultural and linguistic identity of the Arabic language.

"Calligraphy is more than just an aesthetic expression; it’s a way to honour our language and its profound heritage. When you engage with the language through calligraphy, you’re not only appreciating its visual beauty but also deepening your understanding of its roots and significance.
