Asma Abbas Kothambawala, a member of the Sharjah Dawoodi Bohras, exemplifies courage and perseverance. Despite her visually challenging circumstances, she has achieved remarkable academic success, culminating in her recent graduation as a Master’s in Law. Reflecting the Dawoodi Bohras' commitment to lifelong learning and equal access to education for all, Asma’s story is a testament to her community's values.

From a young age, Asma faced significant social challenges. "Growing up as a visually impaired girl was a journey filled with challenges at every step. Society often perceived me as a liability," Asma recalls. However, with her mother’s unwavering support and belief in her potential, she remained relentless in her pursuit for  education. "My mother dedicated herself to reading textbooks aloud, writing notes, and assisting me in every possible way," she shares. This familial support was crucial in overcoming barriers.

Despite facing initial rejections from numerous schools, her determination remained solid. With support from friends and teachers, who provided class notes and extra guidance, she excelled academically. "Scoring 95% in my Grade 10 CBSE Board exam and becoming both a school and  subject topper in Hindi were pivotal moments that shattered societal prejudices," she proudly states.

Building on her academic success, Asma embraced technology to further enhance her learning experience. "I started relying on accessibility features on my laptop and iPad, such as voice assistants and text-to-speech software," explains Asma, highlighting how technology played a crucial role in her studies.

With a Master’s degree in International Commercial Law, Asma is determined to advocate for inclusivity and support for people of determination. "My primary career aspiration is to become an independent individual who understands and advocates for her right to be acknowledged," Asma states. She aims to use her legal education to challenge and change the negative narratives around disability.

Looking ahead, Asma envisions a future where she contributes to both the legal field and the welfare of her community. Her story  is a powerful testament to the fact that disabilities do not define one’s abilities. Her academic and personal achievements serve as a profound reminder that with determination and support any adversity can be overcome.
