The Dawoodi Bohra Women’s Association (BWA) of Dubai hosted its popular Annual Fair, a vibrant two-day event that attracted over 10,000 attendees. The fair serves as a platform for local entrepreneurs, sustainability advocates, and community members to showcase their businesses, engage in interactive workshops, and support charitable initiatives. This year, the event placed a special emphasis on eco-conscious living and social inclusion, with the Project Rise UAE team leading initiatives to promote environmental responsibility and community empowerment.

Encouraging Sustainable Living

As part of their commitment to sustainability, Project Rise Dubai set up a dedicated stall to raise awareness about taking sustainable action and eco-friendly practices. Attendees were encouraged to pledge their commitment to protecting nature, reducing waste, and avoiding single-use plastics.

"Our goal was to make this event about practicing sustainable living, influencing exhibitors, visitors & students on how every individual can contribute to society by taking daily action for the environment and doing their bit for climate action," said Mustafa Fefco from Project Rise UAE. "It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm of the community, particularly young children, who pledged to protect nature by reducing water and food waste."

One of the highlights was the introduction of robotic AI screens, eliminating the need for conventional single-use printed banners. This initiative was widely appreciated by visitors and exhibitors as a sustainable alternative for promoting businesses at a subsidised marketing cost. Additionally, reusable bags and biodegradable cutlery were promoted to reduce plastic waste.

"The digital banners were a game-changer—100% appreciated by all as they replaced traditional paper and plastic marketing materials," remarked Mufaddal Fakhruddin, the Master of Ceremony at the event.

The fair also hosted a composting workshop, where an expert guided attendees on how composting can help reduce household waste while benefiting the environment.

"I did not know composting was that easy had a great time learning from the expert, who shared her knowledge and real-life experiences on how composting can make a difference at an individual level," added Munira Moiz from Project Rise UAE.

A Platform for Entrepreneurs and Specially-Abled Individuals

The exhibition provided a valuable platform for local entrepreneurs, featuring stalls by perfume and incense manufacturers, designers of Rida (the traditional colourful attire worn by Dawoodi Bohra women), and culinarians. Additionally, specially-abled children, referred to as ‘Children of Determination,’ played an integral role by volunteering at the Project Rise stall and participating in interactive activities such as Lego games.

"Their participation was truly heartwarming. Their commitment to joining hands with us in future Project Rise initiatives is a testament to the power of inclusivity and community spirit," said Yusuf Burhani.

Looking Ahead

The event received high praise from community members and distinguished guests. The organisers are committed to expanding the exhibition with new ideas and enhanced initiatives to further educate and engage the community on sustainability practices.

"It is always a positive feeling to participate in such a noble cause, and we look forward to creating more awareness in the coming years," concluded a member of the Project Rise Dubai team.

The Dubai Women’s Annual Fair continues to serve as an inspiring example of how collective action can drive lasting positive change, empowering individuals, supporting entrepreneurs, and fostering a sustainable future.
